Think twice before you buy gold in this unbelievable high gold economy that we are in right now. How about selling gold jewelry? I will get to that in a minute. Unless you have been just completely out of touch with the real world, you are aware that the value of gold is at a record high. But be careful about all of the hoopla surrounding the market of this precious commodity. Why, because this is simply the very worst time to be investing into gold.

Unless you are in the market to buy a piece of jewelry for someone you care about. There is no good reason to be investing into gold. It will take several years for the value of gold to increase significantly. This simple fact says that it will take several years before you can realize a profit.

Now if you have a few hundred thousand dollars to invest, then it might be a good opportunity to catch it in a slight dip in price. But if you are a regular guy like me, I have trouble just putting a couple of extra dollars back for retirement right now in this tough economy. Luckily, there are a few ways of checking yourself that the jewelry is solid gold.

The first way of checking is by using acid. When a jeweler tests gold, they use very specific acids of certain strength, and the stronger the acid is, more likely it’s able to dissolve away at the more purer alloys of gold. Since you aren’t able to measure something that well, you can merely use nitric acid. First make a modest scratch on the jewelry with a file in an area won’t be too visible. Then using a dropper, place a couple drops of nitric acid. If the jewelry is simply plated, the base metal underneath will change color or bubble as the acid dissolves it . If it’s real gold , there should be no noticeable difference before or after it was scratched. For gold chains, it’s easier to test on the clasp at the end of the chain.  Read more...
