Engagement Rings From Victorian Times

Victorian engagement rings come from the period of time when Queen Victoria of England reigned.

Lately some celebrities have been seen with Victorian engagement rings on their fingers. A favoured design of the period was the ‘You and Me’ ring. These rings were French in style and they were highly popular in the 1800s. This ring is set with two stones opposite each other, and these represent the couple. The two stones were sometimes surrounded by other stones, which sometimes matched the pair. Favourite gemstones for the pair were diamonds.

A different form of ring which became popular in the Victorian era was the REGARDS ring. Stones such as ruby, emerald, garnet, amethyst, ruby, diamond and sapphire were used in the ring. The first letter of the name of each type of stone formed the word ‘REGARDS’. Occasionally the stones would spell the name or initials of the person giving the ring.

Some rings would have lapis lazuli, opal, vermarine and emerald to form the word LOVE.

‘Dearest’ rings were another popular style of ring. These rings used diamond, emerald, amethyst, ruby, emerald, sapphire and topaz to spell the word ‘DEAREST’.

Men’s Promise Rings: A History

If you’ve noticed that the idea of promise rings for men is becoming more popular these days, you’re right. But did you know that there is an old tradition behind the new trend? While the modern practice signifies a man’s intention to one day marry his sweetheart. men since ancient times have communicated their fidelity to various institutions, including friendships, professional guilds, and religious organizations, by wearing rings.

The leader of the Roman Catholic Church, the Pope, wears a Papal ring to symbolize his fidelity to God and the Church. According to experts, this tradition stems back thousands of years to the religious institutions of the ancient world, where male spiritual officials wore rings as signs of their faith.

During the 1500s, it was common for friends and lovers to exchange rings as symbols of affection and fidelity. These early rings came in many different styles and settings, and were worn by both men and women.

Modern promise rings for men became popular again in the late 20th century. While many couples exchange rings to signify their commitment to remain abstinent until marriage, others do so to mark the transition from dating to co-habitation, or simply to symbolize the seriousness of the relationship.

Choosing An Engagement Ring

Engagement rings are typically made up of two parts; the setting of the stone and the stone itself. The classic six prong solitaire style was made famous by Tiffany in 1886 and has remained a popular and favourite classic ever since. The simplicity and elegance of the style is possible why.

Different variations of the solitaire ring have included engraved and carved styles on the actual band itself. Some rings also come with stones on either side of the diamond which add a certain amount of sparkle. These diamonds are often present in rows of one, two or three and sometimes more. Baguette diamonds are also popular and remain an elegant option.

One way to enhance the look of the size of your diamond is through an illusion setting. This setting became popular during the 1930s and 1940s. The diamond is placed in a carved centre ‘box’. Some modern variations also incorporate small pave stones too.

Antique looking engagement rings are also currently in fashion and often elegant filigree style rings are popular choices, along with Edwardian styles. Most modern ring designers offer designs incorporating elements of vintage styles.

Promise Rings: What Are They?

We are all romantics at heart and each of us follow the same romantic traditions every generation. As we evolve our traditions may change, however, being a romantic is still a core part of our DNA.

One of the best-enduring traditions among people in love is the idea of the lovers’ token – a gift such as a promise or engagement ring that is intended to remind one of their beloved even in his or her absence. Just as the religious rely on symbols – for example, Christians use the cross – lovers use objects to demonstrate their devotion to one another, signify it to the public, and to remind themselves of their beloved’s ongoing affection.

Some experts say that a woman’s brain is wired to seek a male for protection, status and security. By wearing a promise ring or engagement ring, the woman is announcing to her peers that she has been successful in attracting a mate and the more expensive the ring, the more likely that the male is of higher status and hence who can provide more protection and security

Reasons Why Its Important To Avoid Blood Diamonds As Jewels In Calgary Engagement Rings

Discover why its important to avoid blood diamonds when designing Calgary engagement rings. Socially aware couples can design their rings and still listen to their social conscience. Here is an overview of the conflict free diamonds situation.

The desire to consume coming from down inside the heart of darkness, the argument says, commands people to make forced laborers of other people, even guiltless boys and girls. The end justifies the means, the aggressors say. The means pertains to the means of production, in this instance. Those infernal gods of colonialism may get blocked off for good from countries that want to market their own natural resources. In the interim, humankind disapproves of diamonds gathered up during military conflicts.

Canadian government and others are known to have taken steps to encourage humane ways to gather these gemstones. These governments have a heritage of working alongside the industry especially on topics revolving around so called blood diamonds. A report from a Canadian government official, in 2002, sparked UN action. The resulting certification process still gets used today. The eventual goal intends to persuade all nations to adopt humane means of production.
