Almost every woman owns a little black dress at some point in their lifetime. It is practically impossible to get through your whole social life without wearing one at least once.

The original little black dress was made by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel in 1926. It was a straight, calf length dress decorated with a few simple diagonal lines. American Vogue referred to it as, “Chanel’s Ford”, a play on words, suggesting that owning one would be as popular as owning a Ford Model T. Vogue’s prediction that the little black dress would become “a sort of uniform for all women of taste” is still true nearly 90 years on.

In the 30s the length of the little black dress gradually went from calf length to ankle length. Prior to the 30s black on a woman was still associated with mourning, but the little black dress changed all that.

During the 50s the LBD was worn by all of Hollywood’s leading women. The little black dress began to be seen as sexy, especially when they began being worn with plunging necklines or in the halter neck style. However, housewives and conservative women still wore more formal versions to preserve their modesty and their reputations.
