An LED is a light-emitting diode. LED lights are replacing the neon and incandescent bulbs. The low energy consumption and low maintenance has made them very popular. They are quite small, very durable, and need little power. They are reliable for a very long period of time.

There are a number of advantages in using this form of lighting. In a warm climate, if you change all of the incandescent lighting to LED in an office building you reduce the carbon footprint by half over the incandescent bulb. In a cold climate, the energy saving is reduced by the need to generate more heat, because the LED does not give off the heat of the incandescent. In reducing the amount of heat generated air conditioners work at their maximum, again resulting in less energy consumption.

Some energy efficient bulbs are toxic since they contain traces of mercury. This is just a trace amount. However, LEDs do not contain any toxic mercury at all.

They have a longer life than any fluorescent or incandescent bulb. The maintenance is minimal because of this long life. They are impervious to shock or breakage. They fit everywhere because of the design, which is compact, and their low profile.  Read more...

When it comes to lighting, incandescent light bulbs are virtually antiques. More than ninety eight percent of the energy that they consume is released as radiant heat, and they only tend to produce about seventeen lumens per watt. They have a very short life, and last only about 1000 hours, then the filament burns out.

Fluorescent lights may last up to 20,000 hours, but they produce their ultraviolet light by passing electricity through a vapor of mercury gas. This gas, which is toxic, is released into the atmosphere when it is put in the garbage and sent to the landfill to break down.
