Men’s Fashion – Dressing Smart Casual

We all know what is considered appropriate dress for a corporate office or upscale social function, but many of us are still confused about what constitutes a flattering casual wardrobe that we would wear during lunch with a business partner, or meeting up with some friends at a local restaurant. Since we spend much more of our time in situations like these, it makes sense that we should re-evaluate our collections of shirts, skirts, pants and other accessories and learn to put together outfits that appear polished but informal.

Nearly everyone in America owns, or has owned a pair of denim jeans. This clothing item was invented in America and a pair of jeans has become a mainstay of pretty much all wardrobes. Most people consider the humble blue jean an item of clothing that is only appropriate for the most casual of functions, but the truth is that jeans come in many different styles that can be dressed up or down to fit in beautifully with almost any kind of function. A good pair of jeans, properly cared for and paired with other clothing items of high quality can be the most versatile part of your wardrobe.

Blue jeans do not always ‘blue’ any more. There is a virtually endless list of different washes and finishes available ranging from minor distressing, color tinting, light blue, dark blue and every gradation in between. Summer weather makes for lighter, breezier styles and a pair of lighter colored jeans paired with a Polo shirt or screen printed T-shirt and the season’s strappy sandals is appropriate for many activities.

In the colder months clothing items like v-neck sweaters and mock turtlenecks are a good choice, especially jersey-knit or zip-up styles for the latter, which are becoming popular with young men. Pair these tops with a pinstriped blazer or herringbone jacket and you will have a clean, professional look without it having to be a formal business outfit.

Even though there is plenty of casual wear that is acceptable and still looks professional, there are also several articles of clothing that should be avoided completely. Avoid anything that is branded, do not wear shirts that prominently display a band or movie or anything like that. A small logo on the chest, especially if it is the clothing company’s, is fine, but try not to look like a walking advertisement. Another thing to avoid is shorts, they are really for the beach or around the house. If you absolutely need to wear them go for wool or cotton shorts as opposed to sports shorts.
